Product Details

A rectangular hinged porcelain trinket box with a metal ormolu mount, decorated by the Atelier Le Tallec studio in Paris for Tiffany & Co.

This pattern is “Black Shoulder”, which was the single most popular Tiffany & Co. pattern.

While the black ground (a band on plates) gives the pattern a modern feel, the inspiration for the design came from the fanciful murals unearthed at the ruins of Pompeii. These murals, discovered in the late 18th century, include images of trees, birds, insects and animals against black backgrounds. These Pompeian themes had a great influence on neoclassical French design, which is exemplified by the 1810 porcelain prototype for this pattern. Tje pattern was first painted in 1956 0r 1957.
